Are genres relevant anymore?

I have quite a large music collection. And I am quite anal about keeping it organized. I use various tools and utilities to manage the file names, directory structure, and id3 tags in order to keep a lid on the chaos. I try to convert all the files to vfat-safe file names and try to keep the tags in UTF-8 encoding to make them more accessible across various platforms and applications. Why? One because I hate a disorganized catalog, and two because I have this collection cataloged in at least two applications.

Here is the problem.

I solved the Oil Price Mystery

Yesterday on the way home from work I was scanning the radio dial for anything interesting and stopped on Rush. I usually can’t stand listening to him, although I generally categorize myself as a Republican, I am freethinking and not one of his sheep. He reported a direct correlation between the poor economy and the election of a Democratic Congress in 2006. He stated that “they wanted change, and well…the got it” citing gasoline prices, high crude oil costs, foreclosures and the like. I thought that the generalized statement that our current economic woes are caused by our elected legislators was a huge non-sequitor that unfortunately the sheeple gobble up like candy.

I decided that if he could prattle on about a cause so could I, so I decided to find a correlation the cost of a barrel of oil with something random and present it as fact. What I found was amazing even to me.

screen cap stuff

This is a post for me…

ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/06/08/how-to-create-a-screencast-in-ubuntu/

I figured out how to get xvidcap working in Dapper (gvidcap crashes for some reason).
1. Download the .deb file of xvidcap from http://www.jarre-de-the.net/computing/debian/

2. You’ll have to correct the libpng.so.2 error by doing:
$ cd /usr/lib
$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0.1.2.8 libpng.so.2

3. Launch xvidcap:
$ xvidcap

Works great and it’s much easier!

Sorry to make so many comments. Just finished doing your howto and it works quite well.

I prefer the Flash format for screencasts so I’ll probably use pyvnc2swf (it has a GUI too by the way) but it’s nice to know how to capture to avi/mpeg4.
