ASUS N10J … the next big thing!

I am starting to look at the small “netbook” style computers. My current laptop is a Sagar Desktop-replacement that is sorta like a the evil offspring of an iron forge and a helicopter. (it is hot and noisy). The new small 10 inch netbooks are more my style right now. I use Linux, so 3D FPS gaming is not near the top of my list anyway, and this brick on my lap right is starting to show and act like its age.

ASUS N10JThen I found the ASUS N10J. This is not marketed as a netbook, but is the same size as one.

screen cap stuff

This is a post for me…

ubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/06/08/how-to-create-a-screencast-in-ubuntu/

I figured out how to get xvidcap working in Dapper (gvidcap crashes for some reason).
1. Download the .deb file of xvidcap from http://www.jarre-de-the.net/computing/debian/

2. You’ll have to correct the libpng.so.2 error by doing:
$ cd /usr/lib
$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0.1.2.8 libpng.so.2

3. Launch xvidcap:
$ xvidcap

Works great and it’s much easier!

Sorry to make so many comments. Just finished doing your howto and it works quite well.

I prefer the Flash format for screencasts so I’ll probably use pyvnc2swf (it has a GUI too by the way) but it’s nice to know how to capture to avi/mpeg4.

iRiver works with Amarok!

Trying to get my iRiver ifp 890 to work with amarok was my Everest. I had already conquered many of the smaller hills leading up to this, like player firmware upgrades via a linux gui for the 890 and getting my collection into ogg format, but this final hurdle was a stretch…even for me.

I didn’t want to use the ifp driver, I wanted drag and drop simplicity that the UMM firmware provided. I also did not want to apply a kernel patch, I am running Kubuntu Dapper flight 6 and who knows what that might do to my daily apt-get dist-upgrade.
